Viewing angle changes three things about the picture.

First, brightness drops. At 140 degrees, most screens only put out about half the brightness you see from the front.

Second, color shifts. This is the bigger issue. We see white turn bluish on many panels at just 120 degrees. Skin tones look wrong. Brand colors look off.

Third, contrast suffers. When brightness drops and color drifts, the image looks flat. Dark parts lose detail. The screen no longer looks professional.

So when you choose a screen, the degree number alone does not tell you much. You need to know how much brightness and color accuracy remain at that angle.

How do Manufacturers Measure LED Screen Viewing Angle?

Viewing angle numbers come on every spec sheet. But how do those numbers actually end up there?

We mount the screen on a test bench in our factory, taking readings from dead center. That is our baseline. Next we rotate the panel left, right, up and down at each angle recording two things. The first is brightness. The second is color temperature.

Here is where it gets tricky. Most LED display manufacturers stop at brightness. When brightness hits 50% of the center reading, they call that the viewing angle and put it on the spec sheet. We have however seen many panels where the color shift happens much earlier than that. Although brightness still reads ok, White turns blue or red when set to 120 degrees.

The problem is that there is no standard rule for measuring color shift. Some factories test in a dark room. Some use different equipment. Some do not test color at all and just print the brightness number. That is why two screens with the same spec can look completely different once they are up on a wall.

So, the takeaway for you is quite simple. If you are ever given a viewing angle number by an LED screen supplier, inquire as to how they obtained it (and whether or not color shift was monitored). If they can not answer clearly, then it was probably never tested.
