What is 1080p resolution? Your Quick Guide

In display engineering projects, resolution often directly impacts the display quality and user experience, but many people are unclear about the meaning and applications of 1080p. If you’re a supplier of electronic display equipment, this article will provide you with detailed technical details:

What is Resolution?

Resolution refers to the number of pixels within the height and width dimensions of a display device. For the same size LED displays, the more pixels a device has, the clearer the image quality will be. Therefore, you should know that resolution is a measure of the image quality on LED, LCD, and OLED products.

1080p Resolution

What is 1080p Resolution?

1080p means that the display screen resolution reaches 1920 (horizontal) * 1080 (vertical) pixels, which is a full high-definition (FHD) digital display device with a resolution of more than 2 million pixels, and has a 16:9 aspect ratio. Most TVs, gaming PC monitors, laptops, and large LED screens default to 1080p resolution. Because it can present high-definition video playback quality

What is the “p” in Stand For 1080p?

The letter “p” represents the pixels of vertical rows. For example, 1080p means there are 1080 pixels in vertical rows of a display device. It is a technology that uses interlaced scanning to generate higher image quality. It is also the basic component of the display. Each row of pixels is drawn continuously on the screen.

1080p Resolution: Pros and Cons

Although 1080p is the default resolution for many display devices, it also has some advantages and disadvantages:

 Pros :

1080p resolution has more than 2 million pixels and is widely used in various display devices. Although its resolution is lower than 2K and 4K, its advantage is that it requires less CPU power to decode content, which can achieve faster buffering and smoother playback. It is suitable for large led displays, live sports events, action movies and other fast-moving images, and provides professional scene playback and display.

Secondly, in areas with limited internet connectivity, streaming content in 1080p resolution consumes only a small amount of bandwidth to store videos and images, making it accessible without restrictions.

 Cons:

1.1080p resolution is a type of Full HD resolution, which can’t be used to play ultra-high-definition video sources; it will cause the picture to be blurry and unclear

2.1080p generally has a smaller screen size, and the content that can be accommodated is very limited. This causes users to scroll more frequently to view content.

3. For small screen sizes like smartphones, using 720p can achieve the 1080p playback effect. Using 1080p in this case will result in a waste of traffic and storage space.

Screen Resolution

What are Some Common Screen Resolutions?

What is 720p?

720p means a display format with 1280 horizontal pixels and 720 vertical pixels. It’s a type of high-definition (HD) resolution that provides good video quality for everyday viewing.

What is 2K?

2K is a resolution within the pixel range of 2000. The most common formats are 2560*1440 and 2048*1080. 2560 is usually for LED Displays and 2048 is normally for the film industry.

What is 4K?

4K refers to 3840 horizontal pixels and 2160 vertical pixels. It’s an ultra-high-definition video resolution with extremely high pixel density. Offers a clearer and more realistic visual effect for images and videos. Often used in 3D LED displays, large TVs, cinemas, etc., delivering a better experience to viewers.

Comparison Between Different Screen Resolutions?

720p VS 1080p

720p is the entry-level “standard HD”, while 1080p is “full HD”, and the pixel density is twice that of 720p. We know that the more pixels, the higher the definition of the images, so 1080p can bring clearer visual effects. Secondly, 720p is generally only suitable for small-screen devices such as tablets and mobile phones, and the resource size is relatively small. The image clarity will be reduced if you use this resource on a large LED Screen.  Currently, 1080p is the most practical HD video resolution.

1080p VS 1440p

Although 1080p is the most common resolution among different display devices,  it is generally the default resolution unless otherwise specified. 2K resolution, which is also known as 1440p, is generally recommended in some video games and film and television productions. It is called “quadruple HD” and its clarity and running speed are four times that of standard HD and full HD.

1440p VS 4K

4K resolution is 3840*2160 with a maximum of 8 million pixels, which can achieve the clearest and most delicate image effect you want. Wherefore, the price is relatively high. For users with a limited budget but pursuing high definition, 1440p is an ideal choice. 1440p resolution is a step further than 1080p full HD resolution. Although 4K resolution is becoming more and more popular nowadays, 4K content is only available for members on some streaming platforms.

4K VS 8K

Nowadays, with the development of science and technology, 4K resolution has been widely used in home entertainment, film production, and LED display industries. Its ultra-high resolution of 3840*2160 provides more flexibility for post-production video production and presents a realistic  3D stereoscopic viewing experience for the audience.

While 8K resolution of 7680*4320 is the highest resolution available on the market for now, with more than 3 million pixels. Although the resolution is higher than 4K , its price is super expensive. Usually, there is no need to upgrade to 8K. Choosing 4K resolution can meet the display needs of large-screen high-definition images.

1080p vs 1080i: Understanding the Difference

First, we need to know that the letters “p” and “i” represent the display mode used. 1080p means progressive scan display, while 1080i means interlaced scan display. The number of pixels is the same; the main difference is the display method of presenting the image.

Generally, older TV sets have 576 horizontal lines. The interlaced scanning format of 1080I will display these 540 lines of video twice, displaying images using odd and even lines, with gaps between each row. After one round of scanning, the next 540 lines will be displayed; not all pixels do not display the entire image at once, which will have a certain impact on the image quality.

The new high-definition televisions have 1080 horizontal lines. The 1080p format progressive scan will display all 1080 lines of video on the screen at once, and refresh the entire screen while scanning, which will not affect the image quality at all.

Therefore, now almost all computers, mobile phones, TVs, and LED displays use 1080p progressive display; the early old version of 1080I equipment has been eliminated from the market, because 1080p has the operating speed and processing power to display all video lines at once.

The Requirements Bandwidth for Storage and Delivery of 1080p

1080p resolution takes up more disk space and transmission bandwidth than 720p resolution. An uncompressed 1080p video requires at least 3Gbps bandwidth; some online streaming videos also usually require a stable bandwidth of 3-6Mbps. Therefore, we recommend using a video encoder to minimize the size of 1080p video files, such as AVC/AVI/HEVC, to maintain the original video quality while minimizing the file storage size.

Applications for 1080p Resolution

1080p Resolution TV

Although there are now ultra-high-definition resolutions such as 4K and 8K, and 1080p resolution has always been the main market of the TV industry, it has the advantages of high-definition picture quality and cost-effectiveness, which can meet the streaming, gaming and viewing needs of most people.

1080p Resolution Monitor

1080p, as the most popular resolution on the market, is also widely used in the gaming console and monitor sectors, whether you’re a gamer seeking crisp visuals and rapid refresh rates or a professional creating video content. 1080p resolution supports all kinds of devices. And all gaming enthusiasts can enjoy a smooth gaming experience.

1080p Security Camera

Whether in living, residential or public areas, monitoring equipment is an indispensable part. 1080p resolution is the most commonly used resolution in the surveillance field. Its high-definition camera can help you capture every tiny detail clearly, so you can easily see the clear picture, enhance your life and work

1080p LED Display

1080p resolution is very cost-effective, often used in indoor LED displays, and the corresponding resolution can be obtained by customizing the size. generally can be used in corporate conference rooms, retail, hotels and other fields, presenting high-definition videos, images, tables and other content for different scenarios.

Enjoy the 1080p Performance

We know the 1080p has higher pixels than 720p and can bring higher definition display images, if you also want to make the most of 1080p performance to obtain wonderful content, the prerequisite is that your display device itself must reach 1080p resolution, such as, if the original device only has a 720p resolution, even if the transmitted video is 1080p, the displayed content cannot achieve the image quality of 1080p effect.

In the Foreseeable Future: Beyond 1080p

Obviously, 1080p has become synonymous with high definition resolution, although 4K and 8K technologies are gradually emerging one the market, adapting to these higher resolutions also requires a gradual process, they requires better hardware and faster networks to transmit and download content, therefore, 1080p is currently the mainstream widely accepted in the display industry, I believe that with the development of technology in the future, we will inevitably choose higher resolution!

Conclusion

Therefore, 1080p is the most suitable for the current user experience and strikes a balance between image quality and ease of use.
