What are the Differences Between SMD, COB, and GOB?
SMD is a common type of LED display technology that we use for many indoor and outdoor projects. Cost-effective and easily repairable on-site. If you require a more flat surface with close viewing and enhanced front-order protection, then COB is the better choice. GOB sits between them. You still have an SMD screen, but there’s a layer of glue added to help mitigate damage from touch, dust or moisture.
Can we mix COB & SMD LED Modules in the same Display?
We don’t recommend mixing them. The COB and SMD modules are also different in terms of brightness, color temperature, and viewing angle. And even being factory calibrated, there will be visible variations in brightness and color during real use. It is difficult to eliminate them through adjustment because the light emission characteristics of the two technologies are essentially different. It is better to keep the same packaging type for a single project.
Does a COB or SMD LED Screen Require a Different Control System?
Not necessarily. COB and SMD are different packaging methods, but they both use the same control systems. Brands like NovaStar, Colorlight, and Linsn work with both. The sending cards, receiving cards, and video processors are the same. The control system depends on resolution, refresh rate, and grayscale, not on whether the display uses COB or SMD.
Does the Packaging Technology Affect LED Display Calibration?
Yes. You won’t notice the calibration process, but you’ll notice the result. Before your LED video wall leaves our factory, both COB and SMD are fully calibrated. We normally spend more time fine-tuning an SMD screen because every LED is adjusted separately, while COB is usually easier to keep uniform across the whole display.
Is a COB more Difficult to transport than an SMD LED Screen?
COB and SMD don’t differ much in terms of transport difficulty. Both use similar packaging methods, such as foam padding with cartons or flight cases, and require comparable protective measures. COB modules have a resin coating on the surface, which makes them more impact-resistant than SMD. This lowers the risk of LED damage during transit.
Can a Damaged COB LED Display be repaired on-site?
Yes, but not in the same way as an SMD screen. If your COB display has a faulty module, you can replace the whole module on site and get the screen running again. However, if the damage is inside the module, we normally ask you to send it back to us for repair. That’s one reason we always suggest ordering a few spare modules with your project.

Even if the cabinet size is the same, the module interface and control design are often different. Can SMD LED Display Achieve 4K Resolution?
Yes, it can. Whether a display achieves 4K resolution depends on the total pixel count and screen size, not on whether it uses SMD or COB. As long as the pixel count reaches 3840 by 2160, 4K is achievable with either packaging technology. SMD can also support fine pixel pitches like P0.9 and P1.2, so 4K is not exclusive to COB.
Is the COB LED Display Waterproof?
Not by itself. Compared to a traditional LED display, LEDs in a COB screen are encased beneath an additional level of protection.
